Uses

Terbinafine (TER-bin-a-feen) is used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails.

How to take

Take Terbinafine by mouth with or without food. Take all of the Terbinafine that has been prescribed for you even if you begin to feel better. The symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated. It may take several months to cure a fingernail or toenail infection.

Side effects

The tablets are a bit more likely to cause a reaction. Some of the side effects include: Diarrhea, headache, nausea, heartburn, upset stomach, taste disturbances or a loss of taste; indigestion and rash. Though, at the end of the day, only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Terbinafine. Also, if you do not see any change after a full week of taking the medicine, notify your doctor. The problem may be something else, other than fungal. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Terbinafine and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); a rash; changes in vision; or blood problems (detected by blood tests). Symptoms of a Terbinafine overdose are not well known but might include drowsiness, poor coordination, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, frequent urination, rash, and headache.

Precaution

Do not take Terbinafine without first talking to your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it, liver disease, kidney disease, problems with your immune system, or blood problems. It is absolutely critical that you take Terbinafine as it has been prescribed to you by your physician, even if you are starting to feel better. The symptoms may begin to improve before the infection is completely treated. Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Terbinafine. Also tell your health care professional if you are allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes.Terbinafine has not been studied in pregnant women. However, Terbinafine has not been shown to cause birth defects or other problems in animal studies. Terbinafine passes into breast milk. Mothers who are using this medicine and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctor. The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Terbinafine. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or clay colored stools. These symptoms may be early signs of liver damage. Avoid alcohol or use it in moderation while taking Terbinafine. Alcohol and Terbinafine can both affect the liver.

Drug interactions

Before taking Terbinafine, tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB); rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane); or cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral); Antiarrhythmics (eg, flecainide, propafenone), beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol), Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors (eg, selegiline), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine), or tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitriptyline). You may not be able to take Terbinafine, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed above. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Terbinafine. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
